Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts: 12 Mountains Compared for 2026-27
Updated September 7, 2026 for the 2026-27 winter.
Lake Tahoe ski resorts are spread across several mountain passes and shore communities, so the best resort is not simply the one with the biggest name. Your driving route, ability level, lodging location, parking plan, pass, lesson needs, and tolerance for storm travel can matter more than acreage.
This guide compares 12 downhill ski areas around Lake Tahoe. It includes major destination resorts, independent mountains, family learning hills, and the region’s main night-skiing option. Operating dates, terrain, parking rules, pass benefits, and lift access can change with weather and resort policy. Always check the official snow report before driving.
Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts at a Glance
Open the area nearest your lodging to compare all 12 resorts. Tap a resort name for its full details, then check the exact pass and parking rules below.
1. Heavenly Mountain Resort
Heavenly is the easiest major resort to pair with South Lake Tahoe hotels, restaurants, casinos, and evening entertainment. It spans terrain in California and Nevada and is known for high-elevation views over the lake. The Village Gondola provides convenient access for visitors staying near Stateline, although wind can affect upper-mountain lifts and the gondola.
Strong choice for: First-time Tahoe visitors who want skiing plus a full town experience, mixed-ability groups, and travelers staying near Heavenly Village.
Consider another resort when: Your priority is a compact beginner hill, simple parking beside the lift, or avoiding a large multi-base mountain.
Pass: Heavenly is part of the Epic Pass group with Northstar and Kirkwood. Day lift tickets can be limited, so buy in advance rather than assuming walk-up inventory.
Planning: Heavenly has multiple base areas. Confirm which base matches your lesson, rental, parking, and lift plan before leaving the hotel.
Check Heavenly lift status, tickets, trail maps, and operating information.

2. Northstar California Resort
Northstar is a destination-style resort near Truckee with a pedestrian village, lodging, restaurants, lessons, rentals, and a mountain layout that works well for families and intermediate skiers. Groomed terrain and a contained base experience make it easier for groups that want many services in one place.
Strong choice for: Families, lessons, groomed cruising, village lodging, and groups with non-skiers who still want shops and dining.
Consider another resort when: Your main goal is steep expert terrain, a low-cost day, or avoiding reservation-based parking.
Parking: Village View, Preferred and Castle Peak have different arrangements. The published arrival page still contains a 2025-26 calendar, so check the Northstar parking notes below and confirm the policy for your 2026-27 date.
Pass: Northstar is part of the Epic Pass group.
Check Northstar parking and transportation.

3. Kirkwood Mountain Resort
Kirkwood sits south of the Tahoe Basin on Highway 88. Its isolated location is part of the appeal for strong skiers, but it also means a storm can create a much harder drive than a map suggests. The Timber Creek base provides beginner and lesson terrain, while the broader mountain is best known for challenging bowls, ridges, and natural features.
Strong choice for: Strong intermediates, advanced skiers, riders seeking natural terrain, and visitors willing to plan around Highway 88.
Consider another resort when: Your group wants nightlife and extensive off-mountain services, or you are not comfortable with remote winter driving.
Parking: Kirkwood lists reserved parking on weekends and peak dates, with free and paid zones. Check the Kirkwood parking summary below before choosing your lot.
Pass: Kirkwood is part of the Epic Pass group. Day lift tickets can be limited.
Check Kirkwood parking and arrival rules.

4. Palisades Tahoe
Palisades Tahoe combines the Palisades and Alpine mountain areas. It is a strong destination for travelers who want several days of terrain, a large range of difficulty, and access to Olympic Valley lodging and services. Advanced skiers are a major part of its identity, but both mountain areas also have terrain and programs for progressing skiers.
Strong choice for: Multi-day trips, advanced terrain, groups that want two mountain areas, and visitors using an Ikon product.
Consider another resort when: You want a very small learning hill, a simple one-lift family day, or lodging on South Shore.
Pass: Palisades Tahoe is an Ikon Pass destination. Access days and blackout rules depend on the exact pass product.
Planning: Palisades and Alpine are separate base areas. Check terrain status, connecting transportation, parking requirements, and weather before deciding where to start. The published 2026-27 reservation calendar starts December 5. See our Palisades parking summary.

5. Sierra-at-Tahoe
Sierra-at-Tahoe is west of Echo Summit on Highway 50. It can be convenient for travelers approaching from Sacramento and for South Shore visitors who want a full-size mountain without driving north around the lake. The resort emphasizes playful terrain, family progression, trees, and terrain parks.
Strong choice for: Families, terrain-park riders, South Shore trips, and visitors approaching on Highway 50.
2026-27 parking: A new reservation program starts on December 19 for weekends and selected holiday dates. Pass type and vehicle occupancy affect the fee. Read the Sierra parking summary below before budgeting for your trip.
Pass: Sierra sells its own passes and is also an Ikon Pass destination for 2026-27. Available access depends on the exact product.

6. Homewood Mountain Resort
Homewood sits directly above the West Shore and is known for close lake views and a quieter base than the largest destination resorts. It is most convenient for visitors staying around Homewood, Tahoma, Tahoe City, or the West Shore.
Strong choice for: West Shore lodging, lake views, families who prefer a less sprawling resort, and visitors who want to reduce cross-basin driving.
2026 construction update: Homewood is building a new gondola. As of early August 2026, the top and bottom terminals and all towers were in place, with haul-rope work next. Trails, access roads, and on-mountain areas are closed during construction until winter reopening. The operating plan remains dependent on construction, inspections, snow, and weather, so verify status before booking around Homewood.
Pass: Homewood has 2026-27 passes on sale as an independent resort.
Check the official Homewood gondola construction update.
7. Diamond Peak Ski Resort
Diamond Peak is owned by Incline Village General Improvement District and sits above Incline Village. It offers notable lake views, beginner and intermediate terrain, lessons, and a smaller footprint that can be easier for families to navigate than Tahoe’s largest mountains.
Strong choice for: Families staying in Incline Village, beginners, intermediate cruisers, and visitors who value views and a manageable base.
Pass: Diamond Peak’s 2026-27 full season passes are unrestricted with no blackout dates. The resort also offers different resident and public pricing structures. Children six and under and adults 80 and older can qualify for free lift access under current published categories, but a ticket or pass may still be required. Diamond Peak bases season-pass age categories on the holder’s age on December 1; for purchases after December 1, it uses age at purchase.
Planning: Incline Village resident discounts require appropriate credentials. Public visitors should compare advance tickets, lessons, and rentals through the official store.

8. Mt. Rose – Ski Tahoe
Mt. Rose is reached from Reno or Incline Village by Mount Rose Highway. Its high base elevation can support snow quality, while the Chutes area provides steep terrain for expert skiers. Dedicated learning terrain and youth programs give the mountain a broader range than its advanced reputation suggests.
Strong choice for: Reno-based trips, confident skiers, high-elevation snow, and visitors staying on the northeast side of the basin.
Consider another resort when: Your lodging is on the far West or South Shore and you do not want to cross a high mountain highway.
Pass: Mt. Rose sells several independent 2026-27 pass products, including unrestricted, restricted, off-peak, and selected-weekday options. Blackout dates vary by product.
Driving: Mount Rose Highway can be difficult or close during severe weather. Check Nevada road conditions and resort alerts before leaving Reno or the lake.

9. Sugar Bowl Resort
Sugar Bowl is on Donner Summit near Interstate 80 and has a traditional mountain atmosphere, varied terrain, and access that works well for travelers coming from Sacramento, Truckee, or the Bay Area. It is large enough for a multi-day visit but usually feels different from the village-centered destination resorts.
Strong choice for: I-80 travelers, varied terrain, families and advanced skiers in the same group, and visitors who prefer an independent resort.
Pass: Sugar Bowl sells unrestricted and restricted 2026-27 passes. Its unrestricted product currently includes discounted access at Mountain Collective destinations rather than making Sugar Bowl an ordinary unlimited Ikon or Epic resort.
Driving: Donner Summit can experience chain controls, whiteout conditions, and closures. Check I-80 cameras before leaving.

10. Boreal Mountain Resort
Boreal is directly off Interstate 80 at Donner Summit. Its compact layout, terrain parks, evening operations, and online arrival system make it useful for shorter sessions and travelers who cannot dedicate a full daylight day to skiing.
Strong choice for: Night skiing, terrain parks, after-school or after-work sessions, and direct I-80 access.
Access: Boreal uses online Go-Time lift tickets with selected arrival times. Parking is complimentary for guests with valid pre-purchased access while spaces remain available. Purchase before driving rather than expecting unrestricted walk-up entry.
Pass: The 2026-27 Unlimited Pass currently includes Boreal access from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with no blackout dates. The current promotion includes one free pass for a child age 12 or younger with an adult pass purchase, subject to product terms.

11. Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort
Tahoe Donner Downhill is a smaller Truckee ski hill built around beginners, families, lessons, and approachable terrain. The resort states that its downhill terrain is 40 percent beginner and 60 percent intermediate. Its new lodge provides a dedicated children’s ski school room, easier lift access, food service, ADA-compliant entrances, and a sun deck.
Strong choice for: First lessons, young families, beginner and intermediate skiers, and groups staying in Truckee or Tahoe Donner.
Consider another resort when: Advanced terrain, long vertical runs, or a large destination-resort experience is the main goal.
Pass: Tahoe Donner sells independent downhill and combined downhill plus cross-country passes for 2026-27.
Check Tahoe Donner 2026-27 pass information.
12. Soda Springs Mountain Resort
Soda Springs is a small Donner Summit resort focused on family skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and snow play. Mountain Adventure combines Planet Kids, Tube Town, and Woodward Start Park, while the lift-ticket product provides access to the resort’s two chairlifts.
Strong choice for: Young children, first snow trips, tubing, beginner lessons, and families who do not need a large mountain.
Consider another resort when: Your group wants extensive advanced terrain or a multi-day destination resort.
Pass: Soda Springs offers an independent 2026-27 Unlimited Pass with no blackout dates, subject to its terms and operating schedule.

Which Lake Tahoe Ski Resort Is Best for You?
Best for a First Tahoe Ski Trip
Heavenly works well when the group wants skiing, lodging, restaurants, and nightlife in one South Shore trip. Northstar is a strong choice for a contained village and family services. Palisades is better for a multi-day trip centered mainly on skiing.
Best for Beginners and Young Families
Start with Tahoe Donner for a smaller Truckee learning hill, Soda Springs for a trip mixing beginner skiing with snow play, Diamond Peak when staying in Incline Village, and Northstar for a village base with lessons and other services. These are editorial starting points, not a ranking based on personally testing every ski school.
Compare the same package at each mountain: lesson length, age group, rentals, helmet, beginner lift access and parking. Check the meeting location and allow time to collect equipment. A cheaper lift ticket can still lead to a more expensive day if the lesson and rentals are separate.
If part of the group will not ski, choose a nearby activity from our winter guide for non-skiers before booking everyone into the same mountain day.
Three first-lesson packages to compare
Official pages checked October 12, 2026. These examples are for teens and adults learning to ski or snowboard. For younger children, compare the age-specific programs at the family resorts above.
- Mt. Rose First-Time Lesson Package, ages 12+: one two-hour lesson, equipment rentals and a full-day ticket limited to the Magic, Wizard and Galena beginner lifts. Helmet rental is separate. This is a one-day starting point; the page does not explicitly name a season, so confirm the package and selected date before paying. Check Mt. Rose’s package and booking terms.
- Sierra-at-Tahoe Adult Learn to Ski/Snowboard, ages 14+: one two-hour lesson with equipment rentals and beginner access to the Easy Street conveyors and Easy Rider Express. It is aimed at people who have not yet linked turns or ridden a chairlift. Helmet rentals are available, but the adult package page does not clearly say a helmet is included; confirm that when booking. Check Sierra’s package and cancellation terms.
- Palisades Tahoe Beginner Progression Pass, ages 13+: a three-lesson commitment for first-time beginners in 2026–27, with rentals and lift access for all three lesson days. The published price is US $799.00; this is the advertised price, not a verified checkout total. The unrestricted pass for the rest of the 2026–27 season comes only after completing all three lessons. Lesson one starts on beginner terrain, with access beyond it as you progress. Confirm helmet arrangements. Check Palisades’ program details.
Before booking: match the skier’s age and ability, check helmet inclusion and lift limitations, allow time for equipment fitting, and confirm selected-date availability and cancellation or rescheduling terms. Package listings do not guarantee snow, open terrain or an available lesson.
Best for Advanced Skiers
Palisades Tahoe, Kirkwood, Mt. Rose, Sugar Bowl, and selected terrain at Heavenly are common choices for strong skiers. Terrain ratings do not replace current status. Wind, avalanche control, snowfall, and staffing can keep advanced zones closed even when the resort is operating.
Best for Night Skiing
Boreal is the primary Tahoe-region option for lift-served evening skiing, with its Unlimited Pass currently advertising access through 8:00 p.m. Verify the daily schedule because individual lifts and terrain can close earlier.
Best for Lake Views
Heavenly, Homewood, Diamond Peak, and portions of Palisades can provide dramatic Tahoe views. Visibility depends on clouds, snow, wind, smoke, and which lifts are open.
Where to Stay Near Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts
Choose your main mountain before booking a room. The pairings below use the resort locations in this guide; confirm actual transport and access for your stay.
South Lake Tahoe and Stateline
Resorts to compare: Heavenly or Sierra-at-Tahoe.
Match your hotel with the resort base, lesson meeting point and daily drive. Kirkwood requires a separate Highway 88 plan.
Truckee and Northstar
Resorts to compare: Northstar, Tahoe Donner, Boreal or Sugar Bowl.
Decide whether a resort village or a Truckee town base better fits the group. Account for parking and transfers on each ski day.
Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows
Resorts to compare: Palisades Tahoe.
Choose the mountain base first, then compare the exact hotel, lift access and transport arrangements. The two base areas have separate arrival plans.
Incline Village
Resorts to compare: Diamond Peak or Mt. Rose.
Diamond Peak suits an Incline-based day. Mt. Rose adds the mountain-highway drive, so check the route before committing to another ski area.
For a West Shore stay, compare Homewood’s operating plans with your dates and use our West Shore lodging guide.
Epic, Ikon, and Independent Passes
Pass access changes by product and season. For 2026-27:
- Epic group: Heavenly, Northstar, and Kirkwood.
- Ikon access: Palisades Tahoe and Sierra-at-Tahoe, with available days and restrictions determined by the exact pass.
- Independent resorts: Homewood, Diamond Peak, Mt. Rose, Sugar Bowl, Boreal, Tahoe Donner, and Soda Springs sell their own primary pass products.
Do not buy based only on the resort list. Compare blackout dates, reservation requirements, refund protection, child eligibility, parking benefits, and whether the pass covers the exact dates of your trip.
Lake Tahoe Ski Resort Parking Reservations for 2026-27
Parking information checked September 7, 2026. Reserve the right lot for the lesson or lift base you plan to use. Parking, lift access and lodging parking are separate parts of the booking.
Palisades and Alpine
2026-27 program published
Reservations apply on weekends and selected holidays beginning December 5. The announced options include free reservations released Tuesdays at noon and 7 p.m., and $30 advance paid reservations. Non-holiday weekdays are free and first come. The site says seasonal reservations are coming soon, so a published policy does not mean booking is open.
Bringing two cars? Palisades’ published FAQ limits each guest to one parking reservation per day for one base area. Arrange for another member of your group to reserve the second vehicle, and check that each confirmation names the base you intend to use: Palisades or Alpine. Source: official Palisades parking FAQ.

Sierra-at-Tahoe
New for 2026-27
Reservations apply before noon on weekends and listed holidays from December 19 through April 4. Eligible Sierra passes and verified carpools of four or more qualify for free reservations; other vehicles generally pay $25. Ikon, Powder Alliance and child/kiddie passes do not include free reservations on their own. After noon, parking is free without a reservation, subject to space. Sierra’s published main release date was October 21, 2026; check the official parking page for current booking availability. Guests can hold up to five active reservations. Eligible Sierra passholders can hold four free reservations and add a fifth for $25, unless their vehicle qualifies for free carpool parking. Cancel by 8 a.m. on the reserved date to receive a refund for paid parking.

Northstar California
Confirm the new-season calendar
The arrival page still labels its FAQ for 2025-26. It describes reservations at Village View and Preferred lots, with free Castle Peak parking and shuttle service. Its arrival cutoffs differ between sections. Verify the current calendar, lot, price and arrival window for your booking; do not carry last winter’s dates into a 2026-27 trip.
Kirkwood
Choose the lot as well as the date
The published policy calls for reservations before noon on weekends and peak dates. It lists a free reserved blue zone and a paid orange zone, with a carpool exemption for four or more people. Check the booking page’s current lot map, calendar and price before travel. The general arrival page does not label a 2026-27 calendar.
Boreal’s access section explains its ticket and parking arrangement. For any resort, save both the lift-access and parking confirmations before your trip.
