Lake Tahoe Kayaking: Where to Rent and Launch

Choose your starting beach before choosing a Lake Tahoe kayak rental. Sand Harbor, Emerald Bay, Tahoe City and Tahoe Vista offer different arrival plans, equipment and rental arrangements. Some beach concessions are walk-up only, and paying for parking does not reserve a kayak.

Operator and agency information reviewed September 8, 2026. Prices below are advertised equipment rates, before any separate parking, entry or other charges. Confirm the current total and operating date with the provider.

Compare Four Rental Starting Points

Start with the shore closest to your lodging, then check the access effort and equipment you want. Open a card for the rental location, displayed prices and parking plan.

Sand HarborEast Shore, Nevada · Kayaks and SUPs · Walk-up equipment

Where: Clearly Tahoe Rentals operates on Main Beach inside Sand Harbor State Park. This is beach-based equipment rental; you do not collect a boat at a distant shop and carry it on your car.

Advertised hourly equipment rates: $38 single kayak, $48 double kayak and $42 standard stand-up paddleboard. Clear and clear-bottom boats are separate products with different prices and paddling limits. Compare the actual equipment rates.

Arrival: the operator currently advertises first-come, first-served equipment rentals. Arrange park vehicle entry separately. Check the Sand Harbor reservation and parking guide before a morning visit; later entry depends on capacity.

For Clearly Tahoe’s Sand Harbor rentals, its published policies require participants to be at least 5 years old and weigh more than 30 pounds. Check age, weight and equipment restrictions for your group, and follow staff boundaries for the day. The park allows paddle craft from Main Beach and Boat Beach. Paddle craft are not allowed in Divers Cove.

Emerald Bay / VikingsholmSouthwest Shore · Kayaks only · Steep walk to the beach

Seasonal status, checked October 20, 2026: Kayak Tahoe lists its Emerald Bay location as closed for the season. Check the operator’s location page before planning a rental here.

Where: Kayak Tahoe rents from the beach just north of the Vikingsholm pier. Park at the Highway 89 overlook/Vikingsholm lot, then walk about one steep mile down to the beach. Allow for the uphill mile after paddling. You cannot drive to the rental table. Check the State Park access instructions.

Equipment: this location currently has single and double sit-on-top kayaks, no paddleboards. Rentals are first come, first served. Bring photo ID and cash as a backup for unreliable card service. Read the Vikingsholm location instructions.

Advertised hourly rates: $40 single kayak or $55 double. The operator includes paddles, life jackets and basic instruction. Check current rates and participant requirements before bringing children.

This option suits visitors who can handle the access hike and want to begin inside the bay. Our Emerald Bay guide explains parking and the walk. A rental here is a different plan from paddling a long route into the bay from another beach.

Tahoe City / Commons BeachNorthwest Shore · Kayaks and SUPs · Beach tent in town

Where: Tahoe City Kayak launches its Commons Beach rentals from a beach tent at 400 North Lake Boulevard in Tahoe City. Use the beach rental location rather than assuming its retail store is the launch point.

Advertised hourly rates: $32 for a single kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Check the operator for double kayaks, longer rentals, booking choices and what is included.

Tahoe City Kayak accepts reservations and walk-ins. Beach availability and the final booking terms govern your visit.

Parking: the Commons Beach parking lot closes on Thursdays until 2 p.m. during the farmers market, according to the park district. Plan your arrival around that restriction and follow current signs. Check Commons Beach access.

Tahoe Vista Recreation AreaNorth Shore · Kayaks and SUPs · One-hour walk-in option

Where: Tahoe Adventure Company rents directly on the beach at Tahoe Vista Recreation Area, 7010 North Lake Boulevard. The rental site is on the North Shore, separate from Commons Beach in Tahoe City.

Advertised hourly rates: $30 single kayak or SUP, $45 double kayak, plus a $2 per-person park fee. One-hour rentals are walk-in only. Check availability and the provider’s terms for longer outings. Check Tahoe Adventure Company rates and availability.

Parking: North Tahoe PUD lists Lot B on National Avenue at $10, payable through ParkMobile zone 12889 or the pay station. The beachfront area is for loading during May through November; Lot B closes December through April. Use the agency’s current payment instructions. Read the Lot B parking instructions.

What Does a Tahoe Kayak Rental Cost?

Across these four operators, advertised one-hour single-kayak rates range from $30 to $40. That comparison uses the standard single boats listed above. It excludes specialty clear kayaks and any additional fees.

Compare the full outing, not just the hourly number: equipment type, rental length, parking, park entry, extra per-person charges, taxes and the weather policy. A low equipment price can come with a longer drive or a more demanding walk.

  • Single or double: confirm whether the price is per boat or per person, and check capacity.
  • One hour or longer: ask when the rental clock starts and when the boat must be back.
  • Family requirements: ask about age, weight, adult supervision and correctly sized life jackets.
  • Weather: read cancellation and refund terms before paying for an advance rental or tour.

Bringing Your Own Kayak or Paddleboard

A place that rents boats is not automatically a drive-up public launch. Confirm the legal carry route, beach launching area, parking and current access with the land manager. At Sand Harbor, use the park’s current launch instructions for private equipment; do not substitute a rental booking for launch or vehicle-entry requirements.

Arrive with your craft and gear Clean, Drained and Dry. The Tahoe inspection program says hand-launched non-motorized craft are subject to inspection or decontamination, with both services free for these craft. Its Tahoe Keepers program teaches equipment self-inspection and cleaning.

Paddling into Nevada? NDOW requires a separate $6 AIS decal for water-retaining non-motorized craft such as kayaks and canoes on Nevada waters. Its listed exemptions include paddleboards. A Tahoe Keepers decal is a different program. Confirm the rule for your exact craft; when renting, ask the operator about required equipment decals.

Electric paddle craft, trailers and trips between different lakes have additional rules. Read the Tahoe boating and inspection guide and the official destination guidance before changing waterbodies.

Plan Around Wind and Cold Water

Lake Tahoe stays cold even when the beach feels warm. Check the National Weather Service lake forecast before setting out and again with rental staff at the launch. A sheltered beach view does not tell you what the return journey will be like.

Wear a properly fitted life jacket, dress for the water temperature, carry a whistle and protected communication, and tell someone your starting point and return time. Follow the operator’s equipment instructions, including the appropriate SUP leash. The Lake Tahoe Water Trail safety guide covers changing winds, cold water and trip preparation.

For a first outing, ask about a lesson or guided paddle and keep the plan within your group’s ability. Do not plan a lake crossing or a distant beach destination based on rental duration alone. If wind or the operator’s restrictions rule out paddling, choose a shore walk or another activity from our Tahoe activity guide.

Quick Answers Before You Go

Can I reserve a kayak at Sand Harbor or Emerald Bay?

The onsite operators currently advertise walk-up equipment rentals. Sand Harbor vehicle-entry reservations are separate. Check the linked provider pages for changes and confirm whether any tour you book starts at the same location.

Where can I rent a paddleboard?

The listed Sand Harbor, Commons Beach and Tahoe Vista operators advertise SUP rentals. Kayak Tahoe’s Vikingsholm location currently does not. Confirm the equipment for your chosen location, even when the company rents paddleboards elsewhere.

Can I kayak at Lake Tahoe year-round?

Do not assume a beach rental operates through winter. Providers set their own seasonal dates and may close or restrict rentals for weather. Check your exact date, and treat cold-season paddling as a different trip requiring suitable skills and equipment.

For the rest of your day, compare Tahoe beaches, use our packing checklist or find another guide.
