Incline Village to Sand Harbor
Tahoe East Shore Trail
Walk or ride Lake Tahoe’s paved East Shore Trail for lake views, shoreline stops and access to Sand Harbor. Choose your distance before setting out: the full return trip is about six miles.

Choose your outing
A shorter walk: pick a turnaround time and retrace your route. You do not need to reach Sand Harbor.
The full walk: plan for about six miles out and back, plus any beach exploring.
One way: confirm your return transport first, including seasonal service dates and the correct stop.
How long is the Tahoe East Shore Trail?
Travel Nevada describes the paved trail from Incline Village to Sand Harbor as approximately 3 miles one way. Trail use is free, with sunrise-to-sunset hours. A full out-and-back is therefore about 6 miles, before detours.
Walking-time example: at an average moving pace of 2 mph, six miles takes about three hours. Add time for photos, breaks and park entry. This is a planning calculation, not a promised completion time. A shorter walk can fit a limited afternoon better than rushing the whole route.
What to expect along the route
From the northern trailhead, the first stretch follows the mountain side of Highway 28 before passing through a tunnel to the shoreline near Hidden Beach. The path then continues toward Sand Harbor. Tahoe Fund’s route description identifies the mountain-side section as the steepest part, with grades up to 8%.
For a short outing, set your return time before stopping for photos. For the full route, remember that the hills still matter on the way back. Carry what you can comfortably manage for the entire trip, especially with children or beach equipment.
Plans for a longer connection toward Spooner Summit are separate from this established route. Check the trail project’s current information before treating any extension as open.
Where to park for the East Shore Trail
The northern public trailhead parking is listed by Park Tahoe as Ponderosa Parking Lot, 1102 Tahoe Boulevard, Incline Village. You may also see the area called Tunnel Creek. The operator says the nearby Tunnel Creek Café lot is separate from its public parking program.
Travel Nevada notes that parking rates vary with the season and time of day. Check the posted rate for your visit rather than relying on an old flat-price estimate. Park Tahoe uses credit-card payment at its kiosks or through posted pay-by-text instructions. Have your license plate number ready and pay before leaving the vehicle.

Allow for the whole return trip when buying parking time. If the lot is full, choose another outing or a confirmed transit option. Highway 28 roadside parking is prohibited; use designated access points.
Is the whole outing free?
The path itself has no admission charge. Parking, bike rentals and Sand Harbor entry are separate. Before comparing a walking visit with driving into the park, add every cost for your group. Our free beach guide offers alternatives when avoiding parking fees is the main goal.

Can you walk to Sand Harbor?
Yes, the East Shore Trail reaches Sand Harbor. Check the Sand Harbor guide for walking and cycling entry, vehicle reservations and seasonal rules. Using the trail does not replace the park’s admission requirements.

If beach time is the priority, consider how much of your energy and daylight the approach will use. Choose a shorter walk, a separately planned park visit, or an operating shuttle rather than carrying a full beach setup for an unplanned six-mile return trip.
East Shore Express and your return trip
The 2026 East Shore Express announcement lists free daily seasonal service through September 12. Check the current Route 28 timetable, including the exact Sand Harbor and Tunnel Creek stops, before relying on a ride back. The posted PDF is effective September 3, 2026.
Read the return direction as carefully as the outbound trip. Confirm whether the departure you want reaches your parking area, and check arrangements for bikes, strollers or mobility equipment with the operator. For later autumn dates, make another plan unless a current service notice confirms a ride.
Our Lake Tahoe without a car guide explains the wider network and airport connections. Emerald Bay’s shuttle is a different service with different dates.
Dogs, bikes and accessible visits
Leashed dogs are allowed on the East Shore Trail, but Sand Harbor has separate seasonal pet restrictions. Check the park’s pet rules before planning to continue inside. For another shoreline outing, compare our dog-friendly Tahoe beaches.
The main paved trail was built to accessibility standards, with a ten-foot width. That does not mean every beach access spur is paved or that the route is flat. Review the trail’s accessible design alongside your group’s needs, walking distance and current surface conditions.
Bicycles and pedal-assist e-bikes are allowed on the trail. TTD’s June 2025 FAQ excludes throttle-controlled e-bikes and gives a 15 mph speed limit for all bikes. Follow Tahoe Fund’s trail etiquette: keep right, pass left and yield to pedestrians. Slow down around other people and on descents. Stop clear of moving traffic for photos. Bring water and sun protection, and check the pavement temperature before taking a dog out on a hot day.
Fall and winter planning
Snow can affect both the path and its parking approaches. Park Tahoe warns that heavy snowpack can make lots inaccessible. A paved route should not be treated as a guarantee of clear winter footing.
Check our Lake Tahoe conditions guide before leaving, and use the seasonal packing list to prepare. For a shorter-day itinerary, leave room for changing weather and choose your turnaround while the return still feels comfortable.
